The Suicide Machines - Ska Parade Radio Session - 08.31.96 - The Suicide Machines Files
Live radio session from August 31, 1996, on Tazy Phyllipz KUCI radio show in Irvine, CA.
It's not the greatest fidelity, but the recording captures the manic energy of the band in between Destruction By Definition and Battle Hymns. We'd been on tour for most of the year so we were a well-oiled killing machine by the time we got to Orange County to do this session.
I don't recall much about the experience, maybe a vague feeling of some tension between us and Tazy which is supported by an article in the university paper which you can read an excerpt from in the digital booklet included in the download (link below).

Shaky drum cam by BFF/Drum Tech Scott Anna The groove was strong that night and the drums are nice and dry and up front in the cam audio. Soundboard recording from June 14, 1996, on tour with The Specials in Boston, MA. This is a decent snapshot of how we sounded live after Destruction By Definition came out with a few caveats... In order to cram 15 songs into our allotted 30 minutes we had to play fast and keep things tight. The crowd was especially ornery in Boston that night with some people going to lengths to let us know the...

Drum cam footage of the end of soundcheck on April 22, 2009, at The Rave in Milwaukee, WI. on tour with Saves The Day. Nearly half of the songs on This Addiction were written on tour, we'd work on new ideas during soundcheck when time permitted. Dead On The Floor was one of them. @dextermorgan4432 Probably our most "emo" moment in the intro of that song. I know I often tried to channel Guy Picciotto for the call and response vocal I did with Jay in the beginning (which, oddly, I didn't do for this recording). @DerekGrantMusic The intro is a familiar sound, like normally something I'd be listening to, so the emo-ish thing makes sense now that you say it. And I wouldn't have understood what the hell you were talking about until you pointed it out. Whatever was going on in that link, though, sounds damn cool.

    • @DerekGrantMusic
      @DerekGrantMusic 17 дней назад

      @lessthanthreebrad That was my Crimson-era "lace" kit. I told Jake Cardwell at C&C about the idea for a damask pattern kit, but we weren't sure it was possible. Wrapping them with something like wallpaper or fabric would ruin the resonance of the shells, using a stencil would be clunky and messy for such an intricate design, and painting it by hand was way more work and trouble than I wanted to cause for them. I found a pattern that I liked at a fabric store - it was on a strange fabric that I swear was called "decra-sheer" - a course, fibrous upholstery material like they use for the underside of box springs or couches. I sent it to C&C as a reference and I think they were just experimenting one day and figured out that putting the fabric directly on the shell and spraying it with an adhesive dissolved the negative spaces of the material, leaving just the patterned design. They were able to find more of the same fabric, I think they cleaned out everyplace that had it. I still have the kit and I've used the kick drum occasionally, the toms are safe with a friend in Chicago. Strangely, I can't find anything about the material now - I've searched online but come up with nothing. If anyone reading this can help, please get in touch. @Employee00765 I contacted Jake Cardwell and he thinks it was a clear coat that caused the reaction, not an adhesive. They painted the shells (black), wrapped the material then clear coated - at least, that's what he remembers. He's going to look into it, I'll keep you updated.

    One of my favorites from this album. Probably a stupid question I already know the answer to, is there a reason it was played in the original key and then dropped lower later?

    • @DerekGrantMusic
      @DerekGrantMusic 24 дня назад

      @rick98765 After Agony & Irony we played everything a half step down (or full step?) for awhile, I think maybe for the sake of Matt's voice because some of the melodies on Agony were at the top of his register. It was easier to play everything in the same tuning than deal with swapping out guitars for certain songs which I think we eventually did for a bit. I don't recall when we went back to playing everything in standard tuning, it didn't really effect me performance wise other than having to adjust to singing in different keys (and having to change the pitch of the piano/string tracks which was in my jurisdiction).

      @MarkSmithSJC Unfortunately I don't think there's any visual documentation of the recording, at least I don't remember anyone taking photos, certainly not video. It wasn't a feel-good session I'm afraid, I was at my lowest, deep in depression and could barely function. No one knew what to do or how to help so we just kind of soldiered through. There were some incredible moments though when we were all in a room writing the album together and we made recordings as we went, so there are some really cool early working versions of the songs at different stages of the process. @supa_hot_ice5449 Probably once or twice as rental gear or backline for a fly-in date or festival. I had a falling out with DW when I left the Suicide Machines that left me disillusioned and suspicious of the motives of drum companies. I refused to play DWs or any newer drums for that matter, I literally walked into a strip-mall music store and asked if they had a used kit that I could set on fire without worrying about the loss. For the next few years I only played beat up kits or kits borrowed from other bands. That all changed around 2002 when I met Bill Cardwell and his son Jake from C&C Drums, they restored my faith in drum companies and we've worked together ever since. Great people. Great drums.

      @paulrwlnd I always mix from an audience perspective, but it never bothered me when our albums were mixed otherwise as long as the stereo field sounds right. @@DerekGrantMusic I had a strange feeling it was you, the drums are just so good. I love the heavier snares, one of the best albums that has came out in years. Great job dudes.

    Dude, you are seriously so much fun to watch on the drums. I wish I could be half as creative as you are as a drummer. Have you ever considered doing drum tutorial videos? I’d love to learn how to play the verses of “back to hell” correctly lol
